Hydrogen Concentration Sensor

Sensors for measuring the concentration of hydrogen in ambient air and inside Fuel-Cell systems

AST International has developed specific concentration sensors for leakage detection in Fuel-Cell and hydrogen storage applications, as well as for use inside the Fuel-Cell system.

Our hydrogen sensors are based the very robust and reliable principle of thermal conductivity and are therefore predestined for this purpose. In particular, they show a very low cross-sensitivity to other gases and are extremely stable over the long-term without drift and need for re-calibration.

Thermal conductivity in hydrogen sensor technology

The principle of concentration measurement is based on thermal conductivity, analyzing the surrounding environment of the sensor element. The patented TCS® sensor technology utilizes a proprietary MEMS chip ensuring maximum precision and reliability over the entire life cycle of the sensor. In our opinion it represents the best option for measuring hydrogen concentrations or detecting gas leaks.

The sensor is designed on the basis of functional safety (ASIL).

ASIL is a risk classification defined within the framework of ISO 26262 - Functional Safety for Road Vehicles. It defines safety requirements and specifies safety targets.

Applications for the sensors

Leak Sensor 
(0-5% hydrogen content)

The sensor is part of the safety concept of hydrogen powered vehicles. The gas leak detector is particularly important in the hydrogen supply for safe operation with the critical medium hydrogen.


Concentration Sensor

(0-10% hydrogen content)

This hydrogen sensor is used, for example, in the exhaust gas line of the fuel cell system and allows conclusions to be drawn about the efficiency of the process.


Concentration Sensor

(0-100% hydrogen content)

Located on the anode side of the fuel cell, this sensor determines the hydrogen content in the recirculation loop in various applications (e.g. purge process).

Hydrogen concentration sensor for hydrogen-powered vehicles

FCEVs require a safety concept of the highest level. In particular, the detection of leaks in the hydrogen system is crucial for the safe handling of the critical medium hydrogen. The Hydrogen leakage sensors from AST International, utilize the robust TCS principle (AST patent) and meet these requirements perfectly.
